Previously residents of South Africa and Botswana were able to travel to Ireland without needing a visa. As of 12 July 2024, this will change and South Africa and Botswana are to be added to the list of countries whose nationals must obtain a visa before travelling to Ireland.

If you're a national of South Africa or Botswana planning a trip to Ireland, there are new visa rules you need to know about. Starting from July 12, 2024, you'll need a visa to enter Ireland, whether you're visiting for leisure, business, study or just passing through. This brings Ireland's visas in line with the EU and the UK's visas requirements for South Africans.

This change was announced by Ireland’s Minister for Justice, Helen McEntee, as part of efforts to bolster the country's immigration system and enhance security for all travellers. The new requirements bring Ireland in line with many other European nations, promoting a unified approach to immigration within the EU and the UK.

If you’re from South Africa or Botswana and planning to visit Ireland, make sure to apply for your visa well ahead of your trip to avoid any disruptions.

Irish visitor visa requirements

If you want to visit Ireland as a visitor, you will need to apply for a short stay ‘C’ visa. It is valid for 90 days and you will need one if you plan to go to Ireland:

  • For tourism
  • To visit family or friends
  • To get married
  • For medical treatment
  • For short-term study

There are no family visas, so each person who is travelling with you will need to apply for their own visa. Once you have submitted your application online, you will have 30 days to submit the relevant documents.

How much does an Irish visitor visa cost?

The current fees are:

  • Single entry – €60
  • Multiple entry – €100

The visa fee covers the administrative cost of processing your application. This will not be refunded if you withdraw your application or if your application is refused.
