The UK’s new Secretary of State for Education Bridget Phillipson has reaffirmed the UK government’s commitment to international education, recognising its importance in fostering global partnerships and enriching the educational experience for all students.

Phillipson, who was speaking at the Embassy Education Conference on 23 July, confirmed that the Graduate visa scheme would remain in place, allowing international students to stay in the UK for two years after graduation to work or look for work.

Be in no doubt: international students are welcome in the UK,” Phillipson said in her speech. “This new government values their contribution – to our universities, to our communities, to our country. I want Britain to welcome those who want to come to these shores to study and meet the requirements to do so.

The reaffirmation of the Graduate visa scheme is particularly significant, as it provides international students with the opportunity to gain practical work experience and contribute to the UK economy after completing their studies.

This initiative not only benefits students but also helps UK businesses by bringing in fresh perspectives and diverse talent.

Last year, former UK Home Secretary, James Cleverly, proposed reviewing the Graduate visa route as part of a plan to curb migration figures. There had been suggestions that the visa was being exploited by foreign students to enter the jobs market. However, an independent review by The Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) in May found this was not the case and recommended that the visa should remain.

Key points from Bridget Phillipson’s Speech

In her speech, Phillipson emphasised continued support for international students, ensuring they feel welcomed and valued in the UK.

She discussed their contribution to the British economy noting that each international student boosted the UK’s economy by around £100,000.

Phillipson also provided encouragement for educational institutions to innovate and adapt, ensuring the UK's education sector remains competitive and forward-thinking.

We believe that these policies will continue to make the UK a top destination for international students, offering them a world-class education and a welcoming environment.
